In 1993 graduated from Heriot Watt University, Edinburgh in BSc in Clothing Management, then moved to London to enroll at the prestigious Royal College of Art where he graduated in MA in Fashion Menswear. Specialising in men’s bespoke tailoring, Peter practiced and perfected his skills in pattern cutting, hand made bespoke tailoring and styling. It was whilst studying at the RCA that Peter became the first British entrant to win the coveted Italian tailoring and design competition, the ‘Ago D’Oro’ (Golden Needle) hosted by Brioni in Italy. 

In 1995, appointed Head of Design at Kilgour, French & Stanbury one of the the most prestigious tailoring houses on Savile Row where he reinvented Kilgour’s bespoke tailoring service, introduced an entry level bespoke tailoring service and launched Kilgour’s first ever ready-to-wear collection in London, New York and Tokyo.

In 1998, appointed Head of Menswear Design at Dunhill, London, responsible for the Global design of all collections and licensing collections.

In 2001, appointed Design Director at Chester Barrie, Savile Row London, responsible for all Chester Barrie collections and managing the design direction of private collections for Ralph Lauren, Saks Fifth Ave, Turnbull & Asser, Hackett, Oswald Boateng and Huntsman.

In 2003, announced his own-label private brand ‘PETER JOHNSTON’ providing Scotland’s premier bespoke tailoring by appointment only.

In 2004, appointed Creative Director at Onward Kashiyama, Tokyo working with Isetan and Mitsukoshi department stores launching a collaborative Peter Johnston Ready to Wear collection and bespoke tailoring service distributed throughout Japan.

In 2011, appointed Creative Director at Saks Fifth Avenue, New York launching a collaborative Peter Johnston Ready to Wear collection and bespoke tailoring service distributed throughout America.

In 2024, ‘PETER JOHNSTON’ is well established as Scotland’s premier bespoke tailor offering the best ‘Savile Row’ quality tailoring in Scotland.
